Social Car Scheme

The centre has a number of volunteer drivers, using their own cars to take people to health appointments and some social appointments. They also transport volunteers with special needs to their voluntary placements. All transport requests are risk assessed and the criteria are based on people unable to use public transport. There is a nominal charge and small booking fee for this service and we are able to accommodate regular bookings.

Gardening Scheme

We have been tidying and maintaining people’s gardens in Shepshed for a number of years and the demand grows with every passing year.

The scheme has a dual purpose; it benefits those people whose gardens are being tidied, but our large group of volunteers, including volunteers with special needs, also benefit from the social and physical well-being that gardening brings.

Gardens are visited and risk assessed and then volunteers work on them in groups from the beginning of spring through to late autumn.

In fact, the scheme has proved so popular we now have a waiting list of gardens to be tidied!

Community Garden

The Shepshed Community garden is now open on a time-tabled basis.

We welcome local groups and individuals who would like to come along and use the area to develop gardening skills; learn how to grow and crop fruit and vegetables; find out about nature and the environment; get ideas for cooking and using garden produce, or just simply come along to take advantage of the peace & quiet.

We are also looking for volunteers to help maintain the garden and support garden users to get the best experience possible.

If you are interested in supporting this project by becoming a volunteer, please contact Angie Whitmore at Shepshed Volunteer Centre 01509 508040 or angie.whitmore@johnstorercharnwood.org.uk, alternatively please click here to contact SVC online.

Befriending Scheme

The scheme matches volunteer befrienders to those people who are at risk of becoming socially isolated due to their own personal circumstances. Befrienders visit at a time to suit both parties and provide a range of support from simple friendship to supporting activities such as reading, maintaining a hobby or enabling visits to faith and social places.
