Shepshed Volunteer Centre is situated in the heart of Shepshed serving the community through the following services;

  • Activity Shed groups
  • Community Transport
  • Jigsaw Library
  • Gardening Scheme
  • Wellbeing Garden
  • Befriending Scheme

We rely on our band of willing volunteers who give up their time to help their community, to provide our services, coordinated by a paid member of staff.

If you are interested in volunteering or want to know more about our services please contact us either by phone 01509 508040 or email gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk

Activity Shed Groups

In our well-being garden behind the volunteer centre, we have an insulated and heated activity shed with a small kitchen.  This is a flexible space where we can have groups doing various activities, from military veterans’ coffee mornings, board games groups to craft and chat groups.    We ask for a small donation per person to cover the costs of refreshments and utilities. If you would like to join one of the existing groups, or you have a group who would like to meet in our shed please contact gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk 01509 508040.

Community Transport

Volunteer drivers use their own cars to take people who are registered with us who are unable to use public transport, to appointments locally or further afield to the hospitals.  The charges are to cover the costs of the drivers’ fuel, wear and tear on their vehicle plus a small admin charge.  Drivers are reimbursed monthly with their expenses.  All our drivers have an enhanced DBS check.  To register with us to use our community transport or to volunteer as a driver please contact gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk 01509 508040.

Jigsaw Library

At Shepshed library (Hall Croft) we hold a jigsaw library on the first and third Friday of each month between 10am and 12noon. People can buy jigsaws or borrow them for a small fee. Donations of jigsaws are very welcome and jigsaws are available to buy at the volunteer centre when the office is open.

Gardening Scheme

We have been mowing and tidying gardens in Shepshed for many years, the demand for the service increases every year.  Teams of gardeners go out to registered households, to do mowing, weeding and light pruning, from Spring to Autumn.  Volunteers work in a small team, enjoying the social and physical benefits that gardening brings.  We ask for a donation to SVC for the gardeners to visit, this covers the costs of protective equipment, portable appliance testing and replacing tools when needed. To become a gardening volunteer please contact gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk 01509 508040

Well-being Garden

The well-being community garden can be found behind Shepshed Volunteer Centre, it is a quiet haven in the heart of Shepshed. We have timetabled groups who visit the garden to do gardening activities. We have a summerhouse that was donated by the Rotary Club of Shepshed in 2021 which is a lovely spot to sit and look at the garden. To become a garden volunteer please contact gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk 01509 508040

Befriending Scheme

We match our volunteer befrienders with members of the Shepshed community who have are risk of social isolation.  Some befrienders meet face to face, some are continuing with telephone conversations post Covid.  To become a befriender, we ask for two references and you would need to complete an DBS identity check.  If you are interested in becoming a befriender, please contact gemma@jscharnwood.org.uk 01509 508040.
